Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam was one of the pioneering freestyle and urban contemporary groups to emerge from New York City in the mid-1980s. Fronted by Lisa Velez (aka Lisa Lisa), the band included Alex “Spanador” Moseley on guitar/bass and Mike Hughes on drums/keyboards. They were assembled and produced by the Brooklyn-based team Full Force, who helped launch their debut album in 1985.
Their sound blended freestyle, R&B, and pop, and they scored multiple platinum hits like “I Wonder If I Take You Home,” “Can You Feel the Beat,” and “Head to Toe.” The group was active from 1984 to 1991, leaving a lasting mark on dance floors, mixtapes, and Latinx pop culture.
